Our short film (Friday The 14th) was heavily influenced by the short film Finley and No Through Road we took the influence of the plot from Finley and the location and lost film footage feel from No Through Road. In the process of making this short film there were some conventions within short film making that were important to give us a guide for things such as timings, location and plot and characters.
In our 4-minute slasher film called "Friday The 14th" we followed the codes and conventions of short films in a thrilling way. Firstly, we focused on using comedy throughout the film whilst still keeping the genre of horror. We established the setting for the film immediately, introduced the characters, and built tension quickly to make the most of the limited runtime.
Visually, we used specific camera angles and creative shots to enhance the suspense and horror elements. We made sure to include atmospheric lighting and eerie sound design to create a chilling atmosphere. The use of jump scares and intense editing added to the overall suspense and kept the audience on the edge of their seats.
Narratively, we incorporated the classic slasher film tropes, such as a group of friends encountering a mysterious killer and facing life-or-death situations. We aimed to surprise the audience with unexpected twists and turns while maintaining the fast pace of the story.
Lighting
We used natural lighting as we felt it was reflective of
Setting - Woods / Isolated - link to horror
Costume - Normal - link to horror and comedy
Actors - Antagonist, stereotypically horror but way the victims reacted in a comedic way
Props - Horror props such as knife and mask
Shot types - close ups to show emotions and long shots to see action
Sound - Scary and ambient - link to horror Michael Jackson links to both because of the lyric connotations and because it's upbeat
Edit - Fast and slow paced editing like horror, straight cuts like horror and comedy, and some SFX transitions and fades that link to horror
Title screen intertextually links to Friday 13th but in a comical way as it was called Friday 14th.
In our original plan we set out to use a clown mask for the killer as it suited the horror theme we were trying to convey however when we were coming up to the day to shoot we changed our minds and opted for the killer to wear a pumpkin mask as the film was based near Halloween.
Originally in our initial plan we wanted to find Abbie (the killer) in the little tree hut we found in the forest to add a spooky affect. However we decided against this as in our first shoot we tried using it but the camera angle looked awkward and rushed.
